Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2019 in Manila, Philippines

Following is the speech by the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Mr Law Kin-wai at cocktail reception and screening of “Still Human” at Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2019 in Manila, Philippines today (August 9):

Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening.

First of all, I would like to thank the Cinemalaya Foundation and the Cultural Centre of the Philippines, for arranging this cocktail reception.

I am most delighted to be here this evening. It is very encouraging to see the Hong Kong-produced film “Still Human” being featured in this wonderful event in the Philippines and witness the cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Hong Kong films have gained fame over decades, not only in Hong Kong, but also in Southeast Asia, and all over the world. Today, Hong Kong remains as one of the world's largest exporters of film and TV content. And, we are the major hub for Chinese language publications and broadcasting.

Hong Kong prides itself for its sophisticated infrastructure and excellent pool of talents. Hong Kong film talents and professionals have managed to make their names known in both Eastern and Western film market. In addition to some household names, there are many budding young filmmakers and talents too, including the splendid team of “Still Human”, reaping multiple awards in various film festivals both in Hong Kong and abroad. They all contribute a great deal to our film industry and help keep Hong Kong films aloft on the international stage.

The Hong Kong Government has all along been a staunch supporter of the local film industry. For instance, “Still Human”, was a winner in the 3rd First Feature Film Initiative in 2017. The Initiative is supported by the Government to groom new directors and to provide funding for them to complete their film.

The painstaking efforts of talented producer and director, and the superb performance of actors and actresses have made “Still Human” a success. Congratulations to Criselle, who is here with us today; and congratulations to the great success of “Still Human”, a wonderful work of cross-cultural collaboration. Hong Kong and the Philippines have long shared a close social and economic connection, and I believe the film would arouse much resonance among us. I am sure you would enjoy the film!

May I close by expressing my heartfelt thanks again to the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival for bringing to the Filipino audience an impressive Hong Kong-produced movie. I wish the Festival a resounding success.

Thank you very much.
