Jakarta Dragon Boat Festival 2019

Following is the speech by the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Mr Law Kin-wai at Jakarta Dragon Boat Festival 2019 in Jakarta, Indonesia today (August 3):

Selamat Malam! I am honoured to be here today and witness the success of the Jakarta Dragon Boat Festival 2019.

Started in 2017, the Jakarta Dragon Boat Festival has become an annual event for the community. Our office, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office is honoured to be the sponsor of this meaningful event third year in a row and we are delighted to see the Festival growing in scale and bringing people together from all over Indonesia as well as the world in celebration of sports, friendship and cultural exchange.

In case you are not aware, while the Dragon Boat Festival and culture dates back more than two thousand years ago, Hong Kong is actually the birth place of modern day dragon boat racing. Dragon boat racing is a perfect showcase of Hong Kong’s vibrant culture and we are happy to see that dragon boat racing is gaining popularity in Indonesia in recent years, thanks to the hard work of the Jakarta Paddle Club and Klub Dayung Bahtera. Hopefully we will be seeing more and more Indonesian teams racing in the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival which takes place in May or June every year.

Congratulations to the teams that won today. I am sure regardless of the results, everyone had great fun today. I look forward to seeing the development of dragon boat racing in Indonesia
