Hong Kong Arts Month Promotion in Jakarta, Indonesia

Following is the speech by the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), Mr Law Kin-wai at the Hong Kong Arts Month promotion event in Jakarta, Indonesia today (February 21):

Selamat Siang!

I am happy to meet you all today and together with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, introduce our Arts Month to you.

Many Indonesian friends already know affectionately Hong Kong as a fantastic tourist destination. We have a name for our joyous shopping experience, delicious food, amusement parks and exciting attractions. Less known for but equally fabulous is that we also have a very vibrant art scene, something that art lovers should definitely not miss out.

The Hong Kong Government has been creating an environment conducive to arts and cultural development in Hong Kong. The much-anticipated West Kowloon Cultural District is now taking shape and will be developed into a world-class integrated arts, cultural and entertainment area. Facilities in the district include the Xiqu Centre, the M+ museum, the Lyric Theatre Complex, the Freespace, the Art Park and the Hong Kong Palace Museum. We also have Tai Kwun, a new centre for heritage and arts that brings culture and leisure experiences for all to enjoy.

As an international arts and cultural metropolis, we are also creating more opportunities for young artists, building audiences and enriching cultural atmosphere and savour. The annual Arts Month offers diversified and inspiring programmes from local and overseas artists which include exhibitions, dance, music, theatre performances and more. Reviews and feedbacks have been overwhelming positive and I am sure the programme this year will not let you down.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board will tell you more about the exciting programmes of Hong Kong Arts Month. I would, artfully, ask all of you to go experience Hong Kong cultural life yourself.

Thank you!
